Planet-Friendly Pledges: Your Guide to Eco-Resolutions in 2024

The dawn of a new year brings with it the promise of fresh starts and the opportunity to make positive changes in our lives. As we embark on this journey into the future, let's make a collective resolution to tread lightly on the planet. This year, let's embrace eco-friendly resolutions that not only benefit us individually but also contribute to a greener and more sustainable tomorrow.

Read on to gain inspiration on some planet-friendly pledges you can make this year! Tag us with your pledge on socials by tagging @thesustainableact!

1. Waste Less, Recycle More: The Basics of Sustainability

Start small but make a significant impact by committing to waste less and recycle more. Familiarize yourself with your local recycling guidelines, and make a conscious effort to recycle paper, glass, plastic, and metal appropriately. By reducing our waste output, we collectively contribute to a healthier environment.

Check out your residential recycling program and familiarize yourself with what is accepted / collected. Additionally I recommend researching what other recycling services and depots are near you to recycle materials not collected with residential pickups. This includes soft plastics, certain glass, packaging, coffee pods, etc. Once you are aware of where you can take your recycling, setup a designated area in your home, like a "recycling station" so the whole household is practicing!

Remember, the goal isn't to be perfect and it may take you a little bit extra time to learn, but eventually it becomes second-nature!

2. Embrace Meatless Mondays: A Delicious Twist for a Greener Plate

Consider adopting a "Meatless Monday" routine. The meat industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. By dedicating one day a week to plant-based meals, you reduce your carbon footprint and promote a more sustainable food system. Explore the world of delicious vegetarian and vegan recipes to make this resolution both enjoyable and impactful.

Better yet, try going vegetarian or vegan full-time if you can! There's hundreds of options for embracing a non-meat lifestyle ensuring you can get plants and protein in. Check out resources online such The Vegan Society, Queer Brown Vegan, Vegan Women Summit.

Some of my favourite sites for vegan recipe inspo is Hot for Food, Rainbow Plant Life, and Minimalist Baker

3. Sustainable Shopping Habits: Mindful Consumerism

Commit to mindful consumerism by making informed choices when shopping. Opt for products with minimal packaging or those made from recycled materials. Support local businesses and artisans to reduce the environmental impact of transportation. Consider the lifespan of products and choose quality over quantity, contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy.

4. Reduce Energy Consumption: Shine a Light on Energy Efficiency

Conserve energy by making simple changes in your daily habits. Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs, unplug electronics when not in use, and invest in appliances with high energy efficiency ratings. Small adjustments in your energy consumption can make a significant difference in the long run, benefitting both your wallet and the planet.

5. Cultivate a Green Thumb: Start Your Own Indoor Garden

Bring nature indoors by cultivating your own mini garden. Growing herbs, fruits, or vegetables not only provides you with fresh, organic produce but also connects you with the natural world. Indoor gardening is a therapeutic and sustainable way to reduce your reliance on store-bought produce.

Together, Let's Make a Difference

As we bid farewell to the old and usher in the new, let's make a collective commitment to a sustainable future. Share your eco-friendly resolutions with friends and family, inspiring them to join you on this journey. Small actions, when multiplied, can lead to significant positive change. Let's welcome the new year with open hearts, mindful choices, and a shared determination to create a greener tomorrow.

In the spirit of a sustainable new year, The Sustainable Act encourages you to share your eco-friendly resolutions in the comments below. Together, we can make a difference and pave the way for a more sustainable and harmonious future. Cheers to a green and fulfilling new year!
